2022.01.26 21:11 Fast_Ad7959 How do you keep students at a low volume during group work?
i’m in the middle of a 4 day gig for an 8th science teacher and all she’s having them do for 4 days is draw a human body diagram. I have 30 kids spread out between the classroom, the lab, and the hallway and I don’t mind them talking because they have to but every time I leave one room the other starts to slowly get louder and I realized I was running back and fourth all day shushing them. Any tips on how to keep them at a lower talking level? Idk my head is fried after today

2022.01.26 21:11 1nonspecificgirl I guess it could always be worse
I’m in northern Minnesota. The area currently under weather advisory for -45F. This is not usually a problem, unless your apartment’s heat breaks ( ironically those specific days). Then the pipes freeze, and because it’s me (and others I admit. Your apartment is now filled will FREEZING water. No way to take a hot shower, cause there’s no heating. But even if you could, you’ve used everything absorbent to sop up lake apartment. They did come shop vac, and brought heaters, so there’s that. But I guess I just needed to whine…
Thanks for reading.

2022.01.26 21:11 atomicpenguin12 I think I hate wizards of the coast's dungeons
I've been playing D&D for about 13 or so years now and I've been playing D&D 5th since it first came out. I've mostly been running games and, among the campaigns I've run, I ran Lost Mine of Phandelver a couple of times and Tomb of Annihilation, both in their entirety. And something I've noticed is that I'm reliably disappointed by the dungeons that WotC created for those adventures. In particular, during the Wave Echo Cave, my party made the common decision to hug the left wall and ended up skipping straight to the climax and missed 80% of the dungeon. As well, the Tomb of Annihilation was an absolute nightmare, taking the majority of a year to get through completely, and I really didn't like the number of instant-kill traps (which randomly killed one of my characters who ended up playing Azaka for the rest of the dungeon).
Like, I get it. There is a long legacy of D&D's design and there is a design to the old school dungeons that people really liked at the time and that many people still enjoy today. They like the fact that your character can die because of an unforeseen event and a random bad roll, and that the dungeons are just large explorable spaces that you can skip large portions of. They like the random hodgepodges of contrived, bizarrely designed traps. But I don't think I'm a fan and neither were any of my players. Modern level design has come a long way and we've learned a lot about how to design a trap that feels satisfying and not BS and how to use tricks like gating to control the pace of a dungeon, but it doesn't seem like WotC is using any of that. And while I appreciate the dedication to D&D's legacy, the truth is that the people who made the original system and adventures weren't level designers (which weren't really a thing at the time) and it shows, and while I think that legacy and calling back to times past is important I would expect that some modern design conventions would be added to improve on things and I just didn't see that in the adventures I've played.
I'm not really trying to convince anyone that WotC is bad or that you shouldn't buy their products or anything. Maybe other official adventures are better, but I'm just not really confident that they are at this point. I know that the instant reaction is that I probably ran the dungeons wrong, but I'm fairly certain that I ran it as the book wanted me to and a lot of the issues were simply things that were out of my control as the DM. I know I can just make my own stuff and I don't claim that I can do anything better. I'm just kind of surprised at how much official material doesn't seem interested in putting in the kind of design that we'd expect from, say, a Nintendo video game or an indie RPG, and all of my players seem to have come to the same conclusion so I know I'm not alone on this.
I dunno. You can agree or disagree or ignore this entirely. I was just talking about this recently and wanted to get it off my chest.
